Art-Based Healing – Adult Class

Students will develop a mindful art-making practice centered on healing stress, anxiety, and other issues participants would like to express and address in their work. This is perfect for anyone new to art and looking for an outlet or someone wanting to return to the practice and enjoy art as a mindfulness and healing tool.

During our five class sessions together, we will:

  • Explore how students define art and how that definition affects their ability to create. This is to address any anxiety they may be bringing to their art-making practice before we begin.
  • Reintroduce art as a few of its basic elements. By doing so, the idea of art-making becomes much more approachable and accessible.
  • Practice using mark-making tools (pencils, crayons, markers, etc.) with mindfulness. This means rather than picking up whatever is convenient, we take time to consider the various qualities of the tool (texture, weight, and quality of mark, color) and what would best articulate our thoughts and feelings in the piece we’re creating.
  • Create work(s) that place emphasis on utilizing those elements to express thought, feeling, and experiences visually.
  • Hold a group discussion using a review process that places emphasis on examining the elements of each participant’s work from a holistic and introspective perspective.
