This class is for students who have taken Introduction to Glaze Chemistry or with the permission of the instructor. In this class, students will learn how to use glazy.org to compile many data points, look for and eliminate outliers and design tests to cover a range of possible chemical compositions. Students will learn how to mix a volumetric 2 variable test (25 tiles), and a volumetric 3 variable test (100 tiles). During this class, students can continue to develop a glaze that they worked on during the first class, or they can develop a new glaze.
Please contact the instructor directly if you have any questions about the course. ryanrakhshan@gmail.com
The schedule would run as follows:
Week 1: Review of glaze chemistry 1: materials, basic glaze components, the UMF, and Stull
Week 2: Advanced research using glazy.org. How to structure your own lab using data from dozens or hundreds of public glaze recipes. Mixing tests with 1 and 2 variables, volumetric testing
Week 3: Lab 1 First 2 variable volumetric test (preferably a stull map with constant colorants, fluxes, and boron)
Week 4: Lab 2 Second 2 variable test (either another stull, or a colorant blend)
Week 5: Review results from lab 2 and introduce methods for volumetric 3 variable test
Week 6: Lab 3: First 3 variable test
Week 7: continue lab 3, 3 variable test
Week 8: review results and mix a gallon of your favorite glaze
