Have you ever longed to be a bird and fly high? This two-hour class will allow plenty of time to learn and practice the basics of drawing buildings and landscapes from above – something maybe you may not have tried before. The colored pencil drawing shown is on toned paper, and was created by an adult student in a prior VisArts class that was held on our rooftop terrace!
Materials: Your choice of sturdy drawing paper. Have some sketch paper handy, a regular pencil, and an eraser for a quick preliminary sketch. A ruler and/or a triangle, or some kind of straight edge, would be handy, but not required. The large “Lyra Giants” available on amazon.com are very good colored pencils which are easier than most others for good results, but Prismacolors are good too.
Oil pastels and ink would be harder to work with. If you use a pencil, you could add watercolor later. If so, choose some watercolor paper.
Finding your vantage point: Pick a window to set up a chair and a table or drawing pad, on the second or third floor of your home, of a friend’s. Take the class with a friend and double the fun! Have all your materials within reach.
Before class, if you can, take a look at the website of the prize-winning artist shown here, Stephen Wiltshire, who does very detailed cityscapes from the sketches he makes in a helicopter. www.stephenwiltshire.co.uk.
