Introduction to Handbuilding

This course will provide a comprehensive introduction into the materials and methods essential to ceramic practice. Clay forming techniques in all areas of hollow construction will be introduced and explored, including pinched pottery, coil building, slab construction, and the extruder in the creation of ceramic forms.   

The use of slips, engobes, terra-sigillata, and glazes will explore the role of surface treatments in the context of the skin and bones of ceramic objects. Firings will be at cone six oxidation and an introduction to burnishing using terra-sigillata. 

This class session includes 1750 cubic inches of glaze firings. Students who exceed this amount must pay an overage fee of $0.05 per cubic inch.

This class is for students ages 14 and up.
