Located at the Arts & Innovation Center, in the new Rockville Town Center, is the hottest new venue in Montgomery County, Maryland - The Rooftop. The Rooftop is the only open-air terrace in the county and is available for private and public functions, business meetings, and social gatherings as well as wedding ceremonies, pre-dinner cocktails, sit-down or buffet dinners, and all of life's celebrations!

Special Programs

VisArts participates in many community activities in an effort to raise the visibility of the arts and encourage people to participate in arts activities. From yoga and comedy club acts to poetry readings and live music performances, the Special Programs at VisArts goes beyond our visual arts program to include performance arts and other activities that engages the community in a world of art and culture.

W.F.Lantry (Poetry) - January 5

W.F. Lantry, a native of San Diego, received his License and Maîtrise from L’Université de Nice, M.A. in English from Boston University, and PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Houston. He is the recipient of the Paris/Atlantic Young Writers Award, and in 2010 won the Lindberg Foundation International Poetry for Peace Prize (in Israel), Crucible Poetry Prize, CutBank Patricia Goedicke Prize and the Birmingham-Southern College National Hackney Literary Award in Poetry. His work has appeared in The Wallace Stevens Journal, Prairie Fire, Asian Cha, Poetry Salzburg Review, Gulf Coast and Aesthetica. His chapbook, The Language of Birds, is available from Finishing Line Press, and a full-length collection will be published later this year by Little Red Tree Press. He currently works in Washington, DC and is a contributing editor of Umbrella Journal.


Arthur Harrison (Music – Theramin) - January 5

Arthur Harrison is the president and CEO of Harrison Instruments, Inc., a Maryland-based corporation that designs and manufactures electronic systems for a wide range of applications, including consumer articles for electronic music. Mr. Harrison has over 35 years of experience with electronic music, and has performed on theremin for a decade. His work appears on numerous audio recordings and sound tracks, and he is considered one of the world's technical authorities on the theremin, with his circuit designs implemented by electronic music enthusiasts world-over. Among other appearances, Mr. Harrison has participated in the PBS "History Detectives" series and is featured in a documentary for Voice of America, both on the subject of theremin.


Yvette Neisser Moreno (Poetry) - February 2

Yvette Neisser Moreno is a poet and translator whose work has appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, including Foreign Policy in Focus, The International Poetry Review, The Potomac Review, and Virginia Quarterly Review. She has translated two poetry collections from Spanish: South Pole/Polo Sur by María Teresa Ogliastri (co-translated with Patricia Bejarano Fisher, forthcoming 2011) and Difficult Beauty by Luis Alberto Ambroggio. She is currently seeking a publisher for her first book of original poetry, Grip, which was a finalist in the 2011 Washington Writers’ Publishing House poetry book contest. Moreno teaches writing at The George Washington University, University of Maryland University College, and The Writer’s Center.


Columbia Recorder Quartet (Music – Recorders) – February 2

The Columbia Recorder Quartet performs at various social functions and has been part of the services at St. Matthews Cathedral in Washington D.C. on several occasions. They give an annual concert at the Washington Recorder Society.

Jean Cioffi has degrees in Music Education and Vocal Performance. She has extensive professional experience in teaching, directing, and performing. She now teaches at Middle C Music in Washington, D.C. Jane Gentleman has been an amateur recorder player for many years. She has degrees in Math and Statistics and is now a Director at the Federal Government’s National Center for Health Statistics. Steve Mullany has a degree in Flute Performance. He has extensive experience as a performer, conductor, and arranger, and he arranges for the Columbia Recorder Quartet. He now works at Comcast Communications. Richard Shrager has degrees in Music Education and Mathematics. He has extensive experience in directing musical groups and now coaches for the Washington Recorder Society. He is a retired NIH Mathematician


Ellen Cole (Poetry) - March 1

Ellen Aronofsky Cole is an actress, poet, puppeteer, and teaching artist who has performed in theaters throughout the Washington, D.C. area. Ellen has taught creative writing and drama in elementary schools and has been on the faculty at Round House Theatre, The Writer’s Center, Passion for Learning’s Young Writer’s Institute, and Interact Story Theatre. She has received a number of grants from the Montgomery County Arts Council. Her new chapbook, Prognosis, was published in January 2011 by Finishing Line Press. Her poems have been published in The Potomac Review, The Innisfree Poetry Journal, Ares Poetica.com, in Paper Kite Press’s anthology, poem, home, in Ladybug and Babybug magazines, and she has work that is forthcoming in Bogg: A Journal of Contemporary Writing. Ellen has been a featured reader at many venues in the Washington area, including the Iota Club, the Kensington Row Bookshop, Poesis, and The Writer Center. She has a M.A. in drama from Catholic University.


Charles Mokotoff (Music – Guitar) – March 1

Charles Mokotoff holds both Bachelors and Masters degrees in guitar performance from Syracuse University and Ithaca College, respectively. He has served on the faculties of numerous colleges and universities in the New York and New England area as a lecturer in classical guitar and lute.

Prior to settling in the Washington, DC area in 1991, Mr. Mokotoff made his home in New England where he was widely recognized as an active guitarist and Renaissance lute player during the 1980s. During that period his career culminated with two Far East tours and a well-received New York City debut at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall in 1987, featuring the Premier of Autumn Elegy by William Coble, written for and dedicated to him. Mr. Mokotoff has been hard of hearing for a good deal of his life and is an outspoken proponent of making music with hearing loss.


Jonathan Vaile (Poetry) - April 5

Jonathan Vaile has performed his poetry in New York, Chicago, New England, and extensively in the Washington, D.C. area. His collection of poetry, Blue Cowboy, was published in June 2005 by The Word Works, and individual poems have appeared in Poet Lore, Gargoyle, Minimus, Exquisite Corpse, Phoebe, WordWrights! and Winners--A Retrospective of the Washington Prize, among other magazines and anthologies. He is a three-time Literature Panelist for the Washington DC Commission for the Arts and Humanities, and he received Literature Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1994 and 1997. In 1999, he was a member of The District of Columbia's Poetry Slam Team which participated in the National Poetry Slam in Chicago. He teaches English at a private school in Washington, DC and lives in Alexandria, Virginia.


Sue Richards (harp) and Carolyn Surrick (viola da gamba) (Music) – April 5

Sue Richards (Celtic harp) and Carolyn Surrick (viola da gamba) are founding members of Ensemble Galilei, a group of women playing early and Celtic music. The group tours nationally and has numerous CD's to their credit. They have developed multi-media programs in conjunction with the National Geographic Society and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and have frequently been featured on NPR's "Performance Today".

Sue Richards is a Scottish harp champion, performer, composer, and teacher. She has played for two presidents and Queen Elizabeth of England. She has taught workshops throughout the country, and is a Scottish Harp Society distinguished judge. She teaches locally in her studio. Carolyn Surrick is the guiding force behind Ensemble Galilei. She graduated from GWU with a masters in musicology, and has managed the ensemble through many seasons of touring, many programs of interesting music, and many recordings. She chose the viola da gamba and early music as a teen, and has never looked back.
