“The Classic of Mountains and Seas” or “Shan Hai Jing”, is an animation that takes its inspiration from the ancient Chinese classic of the same name. The book, “The Classic of Mountains and Seas”, is a compilation of myths, many of which focus on a kind of mythological geography. In this book, there are a plethora of mythical beasts, each living in their own fantastical environment. The book is divided into eighteen sections and describes over 550 mountains and 300 channels.
The creatures and environments in this animation also exist within a vast black void, referencing the “white space” found in much of Eastern Painting. This is a space intentionally left empty by the artist for the viewer’s contemplation and imagination. This black space is complemented by the artist’s integration of narrative sound collage creating a moving and all-encompassing visual and auditory experience.
